🌟 A Bonsai in the Stars! 🪴
In 2014, Japanese artist Azuma Makoto launched two floral arrangements, including a bonsai, into the stratosphere. The 50-year-old bonsai from Makoto's personal collection was carefully selected for the Exobiotanica project. Makoto explained, “I use brightly colored flowers from around the world so they contrast with the darkness of space.”
🚀 An Epic Flight! 🛰️
The launch took place from Nevada's Black Rock Desert, famous for the annual Burning Man festival. The plants have reached the stratosphere, providing spectacular images. Unfortunately, the bonsai and flower arrangement did not survive the trip. However, the team was able to recover the photos taken during the flight.
🌱 Botanical Space Explorations! 🌌
Other missions have sent plants into space, including NASA in 2010 with flowers and in 2014 with 'plant cushions' for the ISS. These experiments aim to understand plant growth in zero gravity, essential for future missions to distant destinations like Mars.
