Did you know that the Dawn Redwood, also known as the Chinese Redwood , is considered a "living fossil"? Native to central China, this ancient tree was rediscovered in 1941 after being considered extinct. Today, it is a popular ornamental tree in many temperate climates.

Germination : Seeds should be hydrated for 24 hours before planting. A stratification period of 30 to 60 days is recommended to stimulate germination. Once planted, seeds will typically germinate in 3 to 6 weeks in high humidity conditions.

Maintenance advice : The Chinese Dawn Redwood prefers moist or saturated soils and can even grow in standing water, forming large, thick roots. It grows at a fast rate (up to 1 m per year) and tolerates pruning very well. However, it does not tolerate drought well, so it is recommended to plant it near a water source, such as a pond or river in nature. Indoors, do not hesitate to put it in a humid room or near a container of water.

Life expectancy and characteristics of the tree : The Dawn Redwood is a deciduous conifer, meaning it loses its needles in the fall, revealing its beautiful straight trunk covered in peeling reddish-brown bark. This tree can reach a height of 30 metres at maturity and is able to withstand temperatures as low as -32°C (Zone 5), making it suitable for many locations across Canada and inland. Easy to maintain and ideal for beginners, it can be grown outdoors and tolerates different pruning techniques well.
